Motor City FC got off to a great start in the 2019 WPSL season with a pair of wins on Saturday, June 1 and Sunday, June 2.
The MCFC side took to the pitch to face the Columbus Eagles in Saturday’s matchup, scoring twice before an hour-long severe weather delay was called in the 17th minute.
MCFC got on the scoreboard in the 5th minute on a goal by Mariana Speckmaier assisted by Yujie Zhao. In the 11th minute Taylor Timko added the team’s second goal assisted by Speckmaier.
The teams took the pitch after the rain delay to finish out the first half with MCFC leading 2-0.
The visiting team got on the scoreboard in the second half on a penalty shot pulling them within one goal but the home team poured on the pressure adding a third goal from Tamae Douglas assisted by Courtney Jones.
Speckmaier finished the scoring with her second of the afternoon in the 88th minute after a hard foul in the box led to a PK giving the home team a 4-1 advantage that would last until the final whistle.
On the second day of the weekend double header MCFC took to the field on a warm and sunny Sunday afternoon to face the 2018 Great Lakes Region Champion Cleveland Ambassadors.
Cleveland got on the board first with a goal in the 12th minute giving them a 1-0 lead. MCFC got the equalizer four minutes later on a goal by Alexa Spaanstra assisted by Marianna Speckmaier. MCFC then took the lead in the 42nd minute on an unassisted goal by Tamae Douglas..
MCFC came out strong in the second half with Michelle Cooper scoring on an assist from Sarah Clark to push the lead to 3-1.
Goalkeeper Bethany Kopel was solid in goal preserving the two-goal lead until the final whistle.
Motor City FC will host another weekend double header at Hurley Field in Berkley, MI as they take on the Dayton Dutch Lions on Saturday, June 8, and the Cincinnati Sirens on Sunday. June, 9. Both games start at 2:00 PM. Advanced tickets on sale at motorcityfootball.club.
